After a scintillating performance and 17th rank at the Formula 1 race in Noida, reached his home town on Thursday. Karthikeyan, who had an impressive stint despite having started right at the back of the starting grid due to a five-place penalty, was accorded a rousing reception by his relatives, family friends and fans at the airport here.
The 34-year-old, who finished ahead of Australian teammate Daniel Ricciardo and of Team , told a press meet at the airport that the Noida race was an impressive one for him. "I had a great race, it was an amazing experience. To finish 17th in my home Grand Prix is the best result I could have hoped. It's a shame though that we faced the penalty when we could have finished further up," Karthikeyan said.
Terming Formula 1 as a mile stone in India's racing history; Karthikeyan hoped that it would inspire more Indians to enter into the field. Further, he stressed the need for better racing grounds in cities like Coimbatore. ``Racing became the pulse of the nation for about a week as Formula 1 was termed as one of the biggest national events. It became the subject of talk everywhere. The race was well organized and it proved India can compete with China and in terms of racing track standards," he added.
